Joe lifted his hat from his head, ran his fingers through his hair, took a deep breath and settled his hat back on. How should he answer her? It was a shock.

She wasn’t what she seemed, but he’d sensed there was something different about her from the start. He’d assumed it was because she had grown up with Englisch friends who thought little of being loud and outspoken. She hadn’t. She was one of them. Or she had been. He did believe her when she said she’d made her decision and would take her vows when she could. There was conviction in her voice when she said it.

In many ways she was like other young Amish women still in their rumspringa experiencing the outside world. While they had the advantage of growing up in an Amish family and learning everything an Amish woman needed to know, Abby was still filling in the blanks. He gazed into her bright blue eyes filled with uncertainty. It had taken courage to share her deception. Was she wrong to have kept it secret? Maybe, but he didn’t share his past with people.

It was easier to say nothing than to explain why he was the only member of his family who had survived the fire. She didn’t want to be seen as different. He didn’t want pity. So they both stayed silent about the past.

She was still waiting for him to answer her question. He read the concern in her eyes. The truth was that he remained drawn to her in ways he didn’t understand in spite of her confession. Perhaps even more so because he recognized the courage it took. “Does it change how I feel about you? Honestly, I don’t think it does.”

She gave him the sweetest smile he’d ever seen. “Danki. I’m glad. I don’t have another friend. I’d hate to lose you.”

“You won’t.” It was a promise he intended to keep. He would be her friend above all else.
